This post winter I had my best attempt, but then it shriveled up to another failure. This morning I peeked over at my newest attempt and found this monster! I can't wait to get it in some soil today!

For shame.....

Can vegetables be cute? I think maybe they can. This week the turnips had to be thinned, and although I attempted to only pick the spindley ones, I did get a couple with some little turnips forming on them.

Between camera issues (I have 3 kids, the issue is that one usually grabs the camera, drops it and we need a new one) and computer issues (crunked up computer) it has been a while since actually grabbed the camera, went outside and took some photos. But now we have a camera I hide from the kids so successfully that I forget where it is occasionally and a new laptop. So we are good to go!

So, other than the perennials in the yard, that's it!

Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-53641506864222147552013-05-20T20:37:00.001-07:002013-05-20T20:37:41.655-07:00Its been a while! It has been a long time since we've talked, sorry about that! The garden has been doing okay for now. I have scaled back on the variety of tomatoes in we are growing, basically only Super Sweet 100's (I have one or two other varieties, but no where near the experimenting from the last couple of years). This year's garden will be primarily lead by the boys, I will grow what they will eat. Which is easy for one of them, he eats everything. And the girl will eat all of the tomatoes as soon as she is able to walk and pick them.

So here is what is in the garden:

Super sweet 100 tomatoes
Yellow Zucchini
Italian Zucchini
Snow peas
Green Beans
Pickling cucumbers
Sorrel (they are mad for it)
3 types of eggplant
Bittermelon (ok, this is for me)
Chinese Okra
Thai Peppers (me again)
Butternut Squash
Wintermelon
Chrysanthamum greens
Bok Choy
Turnips
Dill
Cilantro
Beets
Onions
Salad greens
Asparagus
(I'm sure there are more, but I can't remember right now. I'll get photos tomorrow and we can see what is actually out there!)

So I sort of got a crazy wild idea in December... to celebrate 2013, I would run 2013 miles this year. How insane is that? It didn't seem crazy when I said it out loud. But five months into this challenge and it seems a little nutty. Anyway, I'm plugging along on that endeavor. You can follow along by clicking the widget on the right. I promised myself that when I get to the halfway mark I would treat myself to something from Lululemon (a brand of clothing I consider way over priced but so pretty). How many miles a day is that you ask? It is 5.53 miles a day, every day. EVERY DAY. 38.71 miles a week. Approx. 167.75 miles a month. Gack.

So, what have you been up to? What do you think I should be growing in the garden?Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-67879495649091137562012-11-16T13:29:00.001-08:002012-11-16T13:29:33.828-08:00Fall crops

I'm really not sure where the time goes. But I always mean to post what is coming out of the garden. It just never happens some how.

Yesterday my mom picked 2 beautiful green bell peppers and 2 eggplant for the green curry we had for dinner. And today when I went looking around I came in with 2 Beets, a basket full of super sweet 100 tomatoes and a couple of patio tomatoes, 3 immature zucchini and a lone strawberry.

Lately the garden has been the pepper zone. All peppers all the time. Sounds like I need to do some pepper experimenting!

We are waiting for peas to get taller, fava beans, more beets, and some greens. I don't think our arugula or lettuces are going to grow well with hungry bunny rabbits and birds outside. But I can always try again I guess.

Well, now that those beautiful beets have been picked, looks like I have to figure out what to do with them! Happy gardening :)

She is a darn amazing woman! I came out of the garden on Friday with a monster zucchini (really, who hasnt at some point or another?) I really didn't feel like baking a stuffed zucchini today. Plus I have been hearing all about zucchini bread, zucchini muffins, chocolate zucchini bread, etc.

A quick site search and bam! got my project for the day (nope, not cleaning, running, gardening or anything else that needed to get done). Let's face it, who doesn't want an excuse to eat some chocolate muffins? Annie's Granny has a recipe for zucchini fudge cake that I have been meaning to try out for a while. But I didn't want a whole cake, and muffins are just easier to divide up and give away to friends.

Ok, into the kitchen! I followed the recipe (go figure) and baked the muffins for 20 minutes (closely monitored by my sous chef). Barely managed to allow them to cool before cracking one open. Delicious! Didn't even need the frosting. Just the cake/muffin was sweet enough for me. (and obviously the middle.child as well as he inhaled one quickly). The question is, will any make it to my running group today?

Happy gardening all! Now go eat your zucchini!

I did go for an extremely short and hot run after dropping the boys off at their schools yesterday, I did 2 miles and I was so glad to be done. Today I gladly gave up my alone time yo the hubs so he could play basketball, it was 96 degrees at 930!

I managed to sneak outside this morning to check on the plants. Last night the fava bean seedlings were flopped over and the mint looked like someone had tried to dehydrate them in the pot. The mint rebounded, but the favas might be a goner....

I also found an abandoned zucchini on the plant. Oops!

I didn't realize I lived in an oven. Gasp!

And I'm not sure why, but here they are.

The indoor fridge

The top shelf in the indoor fridge is mainly made up of misc condiments that we 'need'. The first large shelf contains some super old aloe juice that I drank when I was pregnant to help alleviate my blood pressure (turns out it was the fact that my legs were dangling off the exam table that caused it to be so high....thanks Doc for freaking me out) [and yes, my daughter is 4 months old, so that should really be tossed], 2 blocks of tofu (we love the stuff!), more condiments, half a watermelon, fridge pickles, some chicken..... and the lower self contains eggs (it is really amazing how quickly we go through eggs!), leftovers from the week and fruit. The two drawers are jam packed with veggies (store bought) and whatever we have managed to bring in from the garden. The bottom skinny drawer is mainly my guilty pleasure drawer, cured meats, cheeses, pate..... yummy stuff that I couldn't eat when pregnant but love. And a fruitcake. I LOVE fruitcake....

The garage fridge

This was supposed to be the husband's beer and work lunch fridge. I commandeered it. And this is before I added milk, eggs and strawberries to it! This is the fridge that I make sure is mostly empty when my Mom comes to visit, because one trip to the Asian market and out fridges are overflowing.

So I showed you mine.... Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-14364458636212635482012-08-28T14:28:00.003-07:002012-08-28T14:28:47.859-07:00Harvest Monday, August 27,2012Ok, I know it is actually Tuesday, but I still wanted to post my harvests. I didn't weight anything, and I'm sure there were actually some that escaped photographing, but here is most of what we harvested this past week.

Most of the things coming in from the garden are arriving out of necessity, which I am very proud of. I usually give away most of our yummies and hardly use any, I have no idea why. I think I am just too used to making grocery lists and using what I buy that way and forgetting that I have a kind of nice garden outside. The eggplant and tomatoes were immediately cooked up in a Rogan Gjost that I have been craving. The eggplant were wonderfully sweet and melt in your mouth good. And the home grown tomatoes added a depth to the meal that is usually absent in store bought tomatoes.

Another night I did use store bought tomatoes to make a dish called chicken Nartaya with the jalapenos and bell peppers from the garden. Yum, yum, yum!

And this whole lot almost escaped being photographed. I finally got my mommy morning to run sans stroller and brought these to my friends. The box of tomatoes went to the nice lady who volunteered to watch baby girl while I ran my 7 miles. I figured I could be away from her about an hour, but not the usual 4 hours I am gone on Saturday morning with driving, running, gabbing and grubbing. It worked out well, I got almost free childcare! The same lady is coming over this Friday to watch all three kiddos while we go to see Les Mis with some friends. Wish her luck!

I spend a good amount of time pulling out still productive plants that were covered in buggies and removing roots from areas that (hopefully) will be planted soon. More on that later!

I hope your gardens are all doing well, and hope on over to Daphne's Dandelions to see what others are harvesting today (ok, yesterday).
Ok, I did a search and saw that the leaf bugs aren't too bad for the garden, and the Praying Mantis is good (ish) for the garden because it will eat the bad bugs (but doesn't discriminate so might eat the good guys too), but what about those other things? They are all over my eggplants

We are late for harvest Monday, again. And forgot to take several pictures. I will blame it on baby brain. Here is the only picture I remembered to snap.

There are the fleshy Thai Chilis, some patty pan squash, a huge zucchini that somehow escaped pickings earlier in the week, banana peppers, pimento de patron peppers, Black Prince tomatoes, 1 Pineapple tomato, a couple of SS100's tomatoes, an eggplant, some cucumbers, and the first of the figs!

Our weekend was pretty busy, we went out to America's Finest City half marathon to cheer on some friends and lots of strangers. The course is pretty neat and an overall downhill grade, but nearly the last mile is a pretty yuck uphill, with no shade coverage in a notoriously hot part of the year. My friends and I brought water and waterguns to spray the hot runners. Unlike previous years, we handed out absolutely no water bottles, but used the bottles to pour over hundreds of hot folks. Note to self, next year get a super soaker and a cooler full of ice water! Everyone really seemed to appreciate the cool down and R even enjoys being out cheering people on. Maybe I can get him to come to my race in September. Or maybe not....

Have you ever had the marinated garlic at your grocery store from the deli section? My husband loves it, and we try to have some on hand for nights when we do al fresco dinners with salami, prosciutto, mozzarella, and fruit (and wine!). But the store sells it for $8.99 a pound. And some times we have trouble finding it. What's a girl to do? Try making my own! So for two days I spend my "free" time peeling garlic. And after we returned home from the race, I made some pickled garlic. I can hardly wait the two weeks to taste how they turned out. I really hope they are yummy.

I honestly didn't know that he had interests outside of work, video games and his girlfriend. But you learn something new every day. Unfortunately he only has a small balcony and a few things in pots. But I wanted to show him that it's ok to grow stuff in containers, most of my plants are in containers. You just have to water them more and remember to replenish the nutrients in the soil. So here is my "garden" tour. (Sorry, lots of pictures)
So that's where the magic happens.... I wish that we had more space that received good sunlight to have more beds, but we make due with what is around. My main struggle on a day to day basis in the backyard is keeping the grass and palm trees alive (and keeping the dog out of freshly amended soil... but that is a whole different issue!). Now it is time to turn my thinking to the fall/winter plants that I would like to see in the garden. We really don't get a frost here in SoCal, so I really do not have an excuse to not have a wonderful harvest every week.
What is going on in your garden today?Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-63023748419361780542012-08-13T20:37:00.001-07:002012-08-13T22:32:21.187-07:00We're back!

I hope! Ok, we took a bit of a break after saying that we were back last time, but I'm still to lazy to get the camera out and boot up the computer. So I'm lazy blogging on my phone (hence the poor picture quality and lack of tags). Sorry!

Let's see.... We took a family trip to Las Vegas to visit with my husband's fathers best friend from Hong Kong who was visiting the US. I think I'm ok never visiting Vegas in the summer with kids again. Ever.... It was miserable hot. We're talking 110 in the shade, fry an egg on the sidewalk hot! Yuck! But the kids loved it and we had a lovely time visiting the Hoover Dam and seeing the sights of Vegas.

The boys both started school. R started public kindergarten and G started pre-k, so I get 3 days to spend with the baby and either nap or do housework that might never get done. So far the housework has won out, but a nap is looking darn good.

Things in the garden are starting to ramp up. We are flush with zucchinis (my friends are avoiding my calls), the cucumbers are coming in so fast I forget to take pictures, our super sweet 100 cherry tomatoes are a big hit this year (we can barely keep a bowl full in the house), peppers are starting and my first bittermelon is growing!

And being lazy, nothing has been weighed at all this year. But we are eating well, so that is awesome. What is coming out of your garden today?

But thankfully we only have a small one! (and my camera is on the fritz, so now I'm posting via phone.... Text with pictures to follow).

This week we had the first of the Thai chili's (seeds from Renee's Garden) and mint picked fresh to add to a Thai chicken salad one night. It's fantastic to be able to wander out and just pick whatever I need for dinner (within reason).

We started enjoying our new Super Sweet 100 tomatoes. And also finally removed the scraggly tomato plant from last year that was still pumping out a few handfuls a week. The size difference between the two plants is pretty significant. The tomato on the right is the old plant, and the left is obviously the new one.

And the zucchini's have started! We picked 3 on Sunday and I see 2 more for the morning picking.

We have been enjoying our kale. This week we harvested around 4 pounds, mostly given away to friends and cooked for dinner.

Also pictured is our most recent guest to the garden. I have seen him every day for the last few weeks.

I hope my new visitor eats some bad buggies! Happy gardening all.

As I looked up I saw a swarm of bees less than 10 feet away from the back door! Holy smokes! The dog was immediately called in and door shut firmly until they passed. I've never seen that before. I was very glad that Gray was eating and Haley was napping and not outside.

Ryle was a good garden helper today. He is very interested in the chamomile that we are growing. The first time I picked it he asked what it was for and when he found out you can make tea with it, he has been trying to pick it. Today was harvest #2.

Now I just wish he still liked tomatoes, we should have a pretty good turn-out this year. We won't have the most glamorous variety, but I'm hoping to rectify that soon. We have 1 black prince, 1 black cherry, 1 pineapple, 1 cherokee purple, at least 1 super sweet 100 (and one scraggly plant that is still giving us a handful of ss100 cherry tomatoes a week), 2 'patio tomato' plants and maybe a few more heirloom varieties soon. I'm slightly obsessed with tomatoes, even though we really don't have lots of space.

Every year I try to decide what plants get some of the precious space, but then I get sidetracked and fall for some plant that I hadn't anticipated wanting in the garden. I think we will focus on the typical home gardener favorites this year: tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, eggplant, herbs, squash and some greens. Drool.....

Happy gardening all!

Our family has grown since my last post in October.

We had a baby girl! She is one of the 3% of babies actually born on their due date. Haley Anne was born on April 29 th in beautiful San Diego at 2:05 pm. She's fabulous.

We also added a puppy the kids named Max. We were told he was 2, but I disagree. He acts like a puppy and has grown a few inches since we adopted him.

The garden is sadly neglected and we are just starting to find a home for the seedlings I started. But tomatoes are starting to come in. I am hoping to be diligent about posting more now that spring is in full swing and the house is settling down. Hope you have all been well!

Life just somehow gets away from me and time is so precious.

Since our last post I ran my marathon. It was a pretty good race. I trained and ran with a good friend who I finally convinced to leave me at mile 20 (I tried to get him to scram and make his goal time at mile 15, but he stayed around). I missed my ideal goal by 12 minutes, but still had a personal best by 5 minutes. Oh yeah... and we found out I was expecting a new addition to the family 2 weeks before the race.... I promised the hubby that I would take it easy and not push myself. And as the expected temperatures started creeping up for race day, I let my goal time slide because I definitely did not want to get over heated. So all in all, I think that it was a pretty good race!

So now I figure out what race I want to do in 2013 and start sweet talking the hubby into letting me go and leaving him at home with 3 little ones!

In the garden not too much happening, we are trying to get things out so that when we have company for Thanksgiving and Christmas we will be able to enjoy some of the lovely produce from our garden.

I ordered some Spanish Rosa and Korean Red garlic from Burpee Seeds and planted that out last week. Of the bulbs we received, the Korean Red was much smaller and had far fewer cloves per bulb. So I concentrated on finding mostly space for the Spanish Rosa.

We are still getting about half a pound of cherry tomatoes from our single Super Sweet 100 plant.

And whenever we need some aromatics, I poach the garden for some lemon grass and lemon leaf. It is really nice to be able to step outside and grab the herbs you need for dinner. Now if I could only remember that they are actually there.

And finally the peas are starting to do something. How come no matter how thickly I think I have planted the peas, when they finally come up they look so sparse? The ones in the container are doing much better than the ones in the ground. We planted out 3 different areas of peas, since the kids love to eat them in the garden and this way we can have some for dinner and try out some pea shoots and tips.

My side garden is a jungle. The big mess is the Yellow Brandywine, so far we have had 5 tomatoes from this one plant, and they were yummy. I haven't ripped it out to give the other plants some sunlight because we have one more growing so far and I hope to share it with my in-laws for Christmas.... dreams. And on the left next to the Brandywine jungle are 3 eggplants. They seem to be getting huge and have really been enjoying the hot temps we have had here lately. Tucked under the Brandywine are my jalapenos. Steadily producing enough for the family and staying out of trouble, that's my kind of plant.
Well, since we planted out the garlic last weekend, they have shot up! One of the blogs I enjoy reading is digginfood.com by Willi Galloway. A few weeks ago she wrote about planting garlic in containers, and since space is a precious commodity in my garden, I decided this was the way to go this year. We had 2 smart pots and a couple of other misc pots available, so I prepped them and planted the garlic. I can't wait to see how they do. I even over crowded one of the pots so that I could have green garlic in the spring. Whoohoo!

It isn't particularly cold or grey here. I just feel like having some baked goods around.
I read about Thomas's blueberry scones earlier this summer, and immediately threw some blueberries in the freezer in anticipation of the day we would bake this.
I just took the scones out the oven and I can hardly wait for them to cool. My almost 2 year old couldn't wait , I had to break off a piece for him. (Ok, I snuck a bite since I had to get him a sample). Even without the lemon glaze.... delicious. And the glaze with the scone ---- to die for. I will definitely be making this again! Fall is in the air and I can't wait to bake our first batch of pumpkin muffins. Unfortunately they will not be from our home grown pumpkins, since we have absolutely none set..... But the vine is still out there for my oldest, just in case something happens. You never know.

This week we had a nice harvest, not a lot of variety, but the fall garden is too immature for much and the summer garden is winding down. We had our first Yellow Brandywine tomato harvest!

We have a total of 6 on our plant and 3 were amazingly ready this past weekend. All together we had 1 pound 15 1/2 oz of Brandywine goodness. My mother-in-law was impressed when we showed her our bounty via skype.

We had one very simply with dinner in a tomato and heart of palm salad. It was very yummy.

And pretty!

There are some jalapenos and habeneros out there I need to pick, but I got side tracked with other garden chores. I'm pretty sure I went out to pick the peppers and ended up cutting back my neighbors encroaching shrubbery, the gladiolas that have started to die back, the roses, and pulled plants that have needed to go for a while. I ended up with 4 containers ready to plant and my yard looks much more trim now. Maybe today the scraggly cucumber vines will be cleared away and the spot made ready for some seed starts.

Harvest Monday is a chance to see what gardeners around the world are growing. Pop on over to our host's site, daphnesdandelions.blogspot.com and see everyone's gardens!

Happy gardening all.Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-38550125485811614432011-09-20T10:45:00.000-07:002011-09-20T10:45:59.413-07:00Harvest Monday, Sept 19, 2011It's hard to believe that gardens around the US are wrapping up for the season. The boys and I are extremely fortunate to live in SoCal, earthquakes and all. Our harvest this week? Basil, Super Sweet 100 tomatoes, Jalapenos and Black Beauty Eggplants.

We have been neglectful in photographing our harvests, but here are the ones we have.

We had 2 come from the garden the past 2 weeks. One was 13 oz and the other was 1 pound 3 1/2 oz. Not to shabby. And no pictures of tomatoes, jalapenos or basil. Ah well.

We also found some tomato hornworms.....

I will admit, I screamed like a frightened girl when I found this one, and I wasn't much better with the rest (my camera is acting up and I can't download the pictures of the rest). They creep me out when they are this big, they remind me of the aliens from the movie... well.... "Alien".... I really need to be more diligent about checking the plants. I glanced at the Yellow Brandywine plant that has toppled over it's 5 foot tall tower.... and I am afraid of what I might find in there.... I look, and we get the little guys.... but some always escape... and I always scream like a girl....

I'll think good gardening thoughts, but I really need to go take a peek at the Brandywine. And I'm nervous....

Pop on over to Daphne's site and see what others are getting from their gardens.
Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-58121572967384137012011-09-09T10:59:00.000-07:002011-09-09T10:59:21.555-07:00Oh what a night!Well, I don't know if anyone heard about this, but SoCal, parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico lost power yesterday. It was surprising to say the least. And amazingly enough, most of my info came from friends on Facebook in other parts of the country who were updating to let us SoCal folks know what was going on.

We had a grand time. The portable blue-ray player wasn't charged, which was unfortunate, because entertaining two boys in the dark is hard. But the IPOD had just enough charge for the boys to watch a show while I ate dinner, by candle light. It would have been romantic, except the hubs was still at the office. Our seldom used camping equipment came in handy though! I went digging in the garage storage bins and unearthed our camping lantern. They boys thought it was fantastic. And showering by lantern was a novel experience for them. Ryle kept getting confused when he would walk into a dark room and try to turn on a light though.

The lights came on in our neighborhood right before bedtime. Everything that needed charging was quickly plugged in incase it didn't last. Most places did not get electricity restored until the wee hours of the morning. So we were extremely fortunate.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/sep/09/power-restored-region/

It is finally a cool day again, so I will venture out to the garden and see what's been going on. Happy gardening!Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-82377150201795075162011-09-07T09:30:00.000-07:002011-09-07T09:30:08.136-07:00Hot and humidI had forgotten how yucky humid weather can be. We have lived in California for 8 years and I avoid traveling to the East coast during spring and summer months because I have become thoroughly wussified about the heat. Yesterday was rainy and hot, never a favorite of mine.

Phew, the East Coast came to Cali! We have A/C, but I try to avoid using it, I may relent today as it is supposed to be hotter than yesterday. I went out to the garden to check up on the garden, pick what was ready and plant out a few things that were outgrowing their starter pots. Within 10 minutes I had sweat dripping off of me.

Let's hope the plants love it though! We planted out the Tatsoi and Kale for our fall garden and more peas and fava beans. I am pleased to announce that as of today, no peas or favas were consumed by any rodents. Maybe it was a one-off incident....Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-19640804798649325512011-09-05T15:51:00.000-07:002011-09-05T15:51:40.732-07:00Harvest Monday, September 5, 2011 and rodent updateHappy Monday!

We've been a little MIA on Harvest Mondays lately, but we had intended to post.... I swear. (And I actually think I'm using the Royal we here.... since I'm the only one in the family to post... ah well.).

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne and is a wonderful chance to see what home gardeners are growing around the world. Or attempting to grow.

We had a few harvests that did not get photographed or weighed, but we've been munching on garden cucumbers and beans for a bit, and of course, cherry tomatoes. We are still waiting on our Yellow Brandywines to plump up and change color.

Well, what's a city gardener to do? We hustled over to Lowes, bought some rat traps and hustled over to the nursery to purchase some seeds to replant. Grrr.... Just when I thought I had a good timeline for planting.

So the first day I put out a trap next to the planter with the peas, with his second favorite garden food, cherry tomatoes (I've been picking them as they start to change color just the slightest so the rat doesn't eat them). The next morning I ventured out to find the peas eaten and the trap still set with the tomato. Arg.... But laziness prevailed and day 2 was trap with tomato again.... but IN the planter... Morning brought more missing peas and a missing tomato with an unsprung trap. Darn it! Day 3, trip to Lowes for a more sensitive trap... And peanut butter as a lure. Day 4.... new traps that I worried about getting my fingers smashed into were still unsprung and the peanut butter was gone. Old trap, next to our Fava bed, was moved.

Gotcha you big rat! (I'll admit it, it scared the crud out of me when I walked outside and actually saw the darn thing.) I know, I know, I bought a trap, I should be prepared for it to actually work, especially when I was mad when they didn't work. But Ugh, that's harsh. I made the hubby toss this poor smooshed rodent in the trash. Gross.... and now I actually have to dodge some rain to try and replant today.
Happy wet gardening. And sorry for grossing you out.Accidentalultrarunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05451734598753777765noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2483322008122807801.post-67259252564095436662011-08-26T11:03:00.000-07:002011-08-26T11:03:32.457-07:00Ngo Om aka Rice Paddy HerbHave you ever heard of Ngo Om? I discovered this through my Mom, of course.... most of my cooking is based on what I grew up with. But I have never been able to grow this herb. And it has a ridiculously short shelf life in the fridge. So every time I wanted to cook with it I would have to make a special trip to the Asian market. And while there is a new one approx 8 miles away, the good one is 17 miles away (I know because it is pretty near the hubs office). So each and every trip to the Asian grocery is a "special" trip.

So I am trying one more time to try and grow this herb. My Mom looked at me like I was wacky when I told her I had trouble growing it. She said she just sticks it in the ground and viola... growing. So I hopped on the Internet and figured out why it's voila for her and grumble for me.... humidity. We have heat out the wazoo here, but dry, dry, dry..... http://www.vietworldkitchen.com/blog/2007/06/growing-rice-pa.html

After reading the article, I emulated the author and potted up my ngo om I had been rooting. Ngo om is commonly called Rice Paddy herb, since I guess it grows best in the moist soil of a rice paddy. The fragrance is a mix of citrus/cilantro and just something I cannot describe. I have heard that some describe it as a sweet cumin in taste.

So I had purchased some right before our trip to SF a couple of weeks ago and plonked some of the hardier looking stems in a full cup of water before leaving. A leap of faith that it would be OK during the week we were away and wouldn't attract bugs. And as you can see, it rooted well. This part of the growing process usually goes pretty well. It's the part when I put it in soil that they just give up.

So I selected a few of the better rooted ones and put two in each container of soil. Bagged it all up, poked holes for ventilation and now I'm hoping for the best.

My finished product. I hope this works! According to the author of the website above, you never have to water the plant again. I hope I have to re-pot to bigger pots in a few weeks!
